Snake scales record environmental metal(loid) contamination

چکیده
Wetland snakes, as top predators, are becoming globally recognised bioindicators of wetland contamination. Livers the traditional test organ for contaminant exposure in organisms, but research is moving towards a preference non-lethal tissue sampling. Snake scales can be used an indicator exposure, many metals bind to keratin. We laser ablation with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) quantify concentrations 19 metalloids (collectively referred ‘metals’ hereafter) Western tiger snake (Notechis scutatus occidentalis) from four wetlands along urban gradient, compared them measured captive scales. conducted repeat measures determine concentration accuracy each metal using LA-ICP-MS. Concentrations wild were significantly higher than reference most analysed, suggesting accumulation environmental exposure. scale sediment sampled wetlands, found inter-site differences between mean parallel patterns recorded sediment. Four (Mn, As, Se, Sb) had strong positive correlations liver contents infer internal concentrations. By screening larger suite we could digestive methods, identified additional (Ti, V, Sr, Cs, Tl, Th, U) that may accumulating levels concern snakes Perth, Australia. This has progressed use LA-ICP-MS quantifying available scales, highlights significance

Snake scales, partial exposure, and the Snake Detection Theory: A human event-related potentials study
Studies of event-related potentials in humans have established larger early posterior negativity (EPN) in response to pictures depicting snakes than to pictures depicting other creatures. Ethological research has recently shown that macaques and wild vervet monkeys respond strongly to partially exposed snake models and scale patterns on the snake skin. Here, we examined whether snake skin patte...

Introduction: Phthalate Acid Esters (PAE), commonly named Phthalates, are toxics classified as endocrine-disrupting compounds; they are primarily used as additives to improve the flexibility in polyvinyl chloride. Occurrence: Many studies have reported the occurrence of phthalates in different environmental matrices, however none of these studies has yet establish a complete overview for those ...
متن کاملChlorofluorocarbon sources of environmental contamination.
The quantities of chlorofluorocarbons (FCC's) used commercially in the United States and globally are reviewed, and estimates of environmental release from the applications are made. The results indicate that sizable quantities of the FCC's that have been produced have not yet reached the environment and that regulation of U.S. applications would partly reduce, but not end, the possible destruc...
